“The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.” (Exodus 32:16)
The Bible makes it clear that God is Light, and He will reveal Himself to anyone who looks to Him. The Bible also shows us that God is Love, and He will communicate with anyone who will listen for His voice to obey His word.
It is right therefore that we presume God would give us His Word in a tangible, unchanging, objective format. The Bible is exactly that, and there is no other book or document in the world that can compare with it. It alone claims to be the very Word that God has given, and backs up that claim time and time again.
Paul wrote to Timothy, his young protégée, and told that in the Last Days perilous times would come. We now live in that time of which Paul spoke.
Here is how The Message sums it up – “As the end approaches, people are going to be self-absorbed, money-hungry, self-promoting, stuck-up, profane, contemptuous of parents, crude, coarse, dog-eat-dog, unbending, slanderers, impulsively wild, savage, cynical, treacherous, ruthless, bloated windbags, addicted to lust, and allergic to God. They’ll make a show of religion, but behind the scenes they’re animals. Stay clear of these people” (2Ti 3:2-5).
And then, to reassure Timothy back then and to reassure us who live today, Paul goes on to say, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. (2Ti 3:16-17).
Here is the point Paul is making – when darkness increases in our world, we need a light that will guide us through the night; a light that is sure, trustworthy, and lasting. That Light is The Bible. Reading and knowing the Bible is the only thing that will establish us and give us every resource we need to thrive in these ever-darkening days.
In the front of an old Family Bible I found these words. I think you’ll find that this says it best –
“This Book contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and it decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s charter. Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the Gates of Hell disclosed. Christ is its Grand Subject, our good its design, and the Glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgement, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, rewards the greatest labor, and condemns all who trifle with its holy contents. This volume is the Word of GOD.”
Tomorrow? “The Conflict of the Ages….”
