“As many as are led by the Spirit, these are the children of God.” (Romans 8:14)
Yesterday we started this new series on Being Led by the Spirit. We opened with a comparison between reading Maps and reading The Bible, with the understanding that in both cases one must be prepared to actually take the trip themselves. Here’s a brief summary of what we covered:
Maps are meaningless if you don’t know where you are in relationship to the Map. To read a map correctly you must start from where you are. The same is true of The Bible – it makes no sense if you don’t find it saying, “You are Here.” Also, Maps help you chart a course to get you from where you are to where you need to be. The Bible does the same thing, only with eternal consequences. But Maps cannot get you there — you must take the trip yourself! Duh.
We also learned that often it helps to stop and ask directions from others who are familiar with the road. In like manner, its helpful to ask directions from others who are familiar with the ways of God.
Finally, as any seasoned traveler will tell you – whether they read maps and travel the world, or read The Bible and follow God’s ways – it is important to pay attention to the signs that are posted along your route; comparing them with The Map to insure you are traveling on the right path.
And that’s what we want to focus in on now – The Signs that show we are being led by the Spirit. No doubt there are many, but we will look specifically at eight different signs that are posted along our route to help us know we are in step with the Spirit of God.
The Psalmist wrote, “How can a young person live a clean life? By carefully reading the map of your Word. I’m single-minded in pursuit of you; don’t let me miss the road signs you’ve posted” (Psalm 119:9-10 The Message).
Now, for the record, not all signs are from God. There was this guy driving along the highway asking God for a sign, “Speak to me Lord; give me a sign. I’ll do anything You say.” Just then he looked up and saw a road sign that said, “Clean Restrooms Ahead.” So, he stopped and cleaned the next fifteen public restrooms! Umm, I’m not so sure that he was hearing from God on that one. What do you think?
Tomorrow we will begin our discussion on the Signs you can trust and safely follow unto your destination.
